KICD Grade 2 Curriculum Designs (2025): Free PDFs

At its core, a curriculum design is your daily guide as a teacher. KICD brings them together to help you stay aligned with CBC goals, without having to come up with everything on your own.

Each design gives you:

  • Topics to teach — organised into strands and sub-strands
  • Clear outcomes — what learners should understand or be able to do
  • Suggested activities that match the age and level of your learners
  • Simple assessment ideas — so you can check progress along the way

In other words, it’s the structure behind your schemes, lesson plans, and daily routines — and using it makes your work smoother and more intentional.

Many people think Grade 2 is “just another class,” but any lower primary teacher knows how critical this stage is. At this point, learners are building on the basics they got in Grade 1 — now with more independence, more curiosity, and deeper thinking.

When you use the curriculum design well, you ensure:

  • A smooth continuation from the previous year’s content
  • Lessons that suit the mental and emotional level of your learners
  • A stronger foundation for Grade 3 and upper primary
  • Balanced growth — academically, socially, and emotionally

The best part? You’re not teaching from scratch. The design provides you with a roadmap — all you need to do is bring it to life in your classroom.

Just like in Grade 1, your Grade 2 learners will explore a wide range of subjects — but this time, with more structure and purpose. Here’s what’s covered:

  • English Activities
  • Kiswahili Activities
  • Mathematical Activities
  • Environmental Activities
  • Religious Education Activities
  • Creative Arts
  • Hygiene and Nutrition
  • Physical and Health Education (PHE)

Each subject area has strands and sub-strands, giving you clear learning goals to work toward every week. And because CBC is activity-based, every lesson becomes an opportunity for your learners to explore, talk, try, make mistakes, and grow.

Some teachers ask, “Is this design only for when the CS or a TSC official visits?” Not.

The curriculum design is supposed to support your daily teaching. You can use it to:

  • Plan your schemes of work and weekly forecasts
  • Identify what each lesson should focus on (your objectives)
  • Choose which activities to include — and tweak them to fit your learners and environment
  • Track progress, even through informal tasks like songs, drawings, or short class discussions

By now, you’ve heard about the CBC’s seven core competencies. But how do they show up in a Grade 2 class?

Let’s break them down with examples:

  • Communication & Collaboration – Learners work together to solve a puzzle or present a group story.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving – They figure out the best way to build something using local materials.
  • Imagination & Creativity – They act out a story, make art, or compose a short song.
  • Citizenship – They learn about helping others and respecting school rules.
  • Digital Literacy – Where possible, they explore basic tech tools or talk about safe online habits.
  • Learning to Learn – They set small goals and reflect on what they’ve achieved.
  • Self-Efficacy – They try new things without fear of “failing”.

With the right mindset, you’ll see that every lesson — from Kiswahili to PHE — can build more than just academic knowledge. It shapes the learner’s whole self.

Maybe this is your first year teaching CBC. Or maybe you’ve been in ECDE and just moved up. Whatever the case, here’s some advice from fellow teachers who’ve walked the same path:

  • Don’t just plan — prepare with purpose. Start with the design, then add your creativity.
  • Be flexible. CBC is not one-size-fits-all. Modify tasks based on what you have — or don’t have.
  • Focus on engagement. Second graders love role play, songs, and drawing — use those to teach.
  • Keep learning outcomes in mind. Even if you change an activity, make sure it still meets the goal.
  • Talk to your colleagues. Ask teachers who’ve taught Grade 1 or 3 how they handled different strands.

You don’t have to be perfect. CBC is about progress — both for learners and for teachers.

Does KICD update curriculum designs every year?

No, not every year. Updates are made when necessary. Always check that you’re using the latest version.

Can I still use last year’s (2024) version?

Yes — if no new update has been released. Most CBC designs stay valid for a few years.

Are these the same designs used in private schools?

Yes. All registered schools, public and private, must follow the KICD-approved curriculum.

Can I use the design to prepare schemes and lessons?

Absolutely. That’s exactly what it’s meant for.

You don’t have to stop at Grade 2. We’ve also shared free access to other levels:
