KNEC E-Certificate Platform: Access and Verify Certificates

The KNEC e certificate platform, officially branded the KNEC E-Certificate Platform, lets eligible candidates access a digital KNEC certificate and lets approved organisations verify certificate records online. At our last check, the public portal stated that KCSE certificates for 1989–2024 were available. Register with your own email, complete identity verification, enter the correct examination index number and year, then follow the portal’s payment and download steps. For confirmation letters, biodata amendments, foreign qualification equation or other certificate queries, use KNEC QMIS instead.

KNEC e certificate platform access and verification guide

Is your certificate available on the KNEC e certificate platform?

Check the service banner on the official portal before creating an order. On 27 July 2026, the KNEC e certificate platform displayed KCSE 1989–2024 as available for download. It listed KCSE 2025, KCPE, TVET, KPSEA and teacher examinations as coming soon.

Coverage warning: Do not assume that every examination, certificate type or year is already available. The current portal notice should guide you, even where an older manual or third-party page gives broader coverage.

If your examination type or year is not listed as available, do not force a different selection or pay for an unrelated service. Use the KNEC QMIS guide to identify the correct confirmation, certification or query route, or contact KNEC through the official support page.

What the KNEC e certificate platform does

The platform serves two main user groups:

  • Applicants, students and alumni: access their own available digital certificate, download it and send a verification report to an employer or another institution.
  • Verifier organisations: employers, universities, professional bodies, government agencies and other approved institutions that need to authenticate candidate credentials.

The digital certificate includes an authenticity mechanism described by KNEC as a blockchain verification hash. Verification checks the submitted examination details and certificate against KNEC records. A successful verifier report may show the record as genuine; a result marked Referred to KNEC requires official follow-up and should not be treated automatically as proof that a certificate is fake.

The service does not replace every KNEC certificate process. It is separate from QMIS and from the established route for collecting an original physical certificate. For a wider directory of systems, see our KNEC portals and exam services guide.

Requirements and current certificate coverage

Before using the KNEC e certificate platform as an applicant, prepare the following:

  • A personal email address that you can open immediately to receive one-time passwords.
  • Your full name and date of birth exactly as they appear on your identification records.
  • Your National ID number if you are a Kenyan citizen.
  • An active phone number for profile details and eCitizen payment prompts.
  • Your correct examination index number, examination type and examination year.
  • A phone or computer with a stable internet connection and a PDF reader.

Your examination index number is not the same as your National ID number. Entering the wrong number, year or examination type can cause the certificate lookup to fail. Confirm the details from your result slip or other official examination record before starting.

How to register and access the KNEC e certificate platform

  1. Open ecertificate.knec.ac.ke. You may also start from the main KNEC website and select the E-Certificate service.
  2. Select Sign up / Register, then choose Applicant (Student/Alumni) when requesting your own certificate. Organisations should choose the verifier option.
  3. Enter your full name and personal email address. Accept the applicable terms only after reviewing them, then request the email OTP.
  4. Enter the six-digit OTP sent to your email. The official guide says the code expires after 10 minutes, so request a new code if it has expired.
  5. After signing in, open the profile update option. Select your citizenship and enter your name, email, date of birth and phone number. Kenyan citizens must also enter their National ID number. A profile photo is optional in the official guide.
  6. Review the information carefully and submit it for identity verification. KNEC states that Kenyan applicant details are checked against the Integrated Population Registration System using the National ID.

Expected result: You reach the applicant dashboard with an active profile and can choose the option to generate an e-certificate. Returning users log in with their registered email and a new OTP rather than relying on a shared email account.

How to generate and download your KNEC e-certificate

  1. From your dashboard, choose Generate E-Certificate.
  2. Confirm the pre-filled personal details, then enter your examination index number.
  3. Select the examination type and year only where the current portal shows that record as available.
  4. Allow the system to complete identity verification and the KNEC certificate lookup. Both checks must pass before you proceed.
  5. Review the applicant and certificate details before payment. Continue to eCitizen and use M-Pesa or another payment method offered on the payment page.
  6. Wait for payment confirmation. If the request remains pending after you have paid, use the status-check option on the relevant dashboard record instead of paying a second time.
  7. Select Download Certificate when the status is ready. Save the PDF in a secure folder and keep an offline backup.

The official user guide states that a generated certificate remains downloadable from My Certificates for six months from its issue date. After that period, the record remains in your history but the download button is disabled; generating a fresh downloadable copy requires a new order and payment.

A digital KNEC certificate is not the same task as checking newly released examination results. Candidates who only need results or a result slip should follow the KNEC KCSE results portal guide instead of starting an e-certificate order.

How to verify a KNEC e-certificate

An applicant can send a verification report to an employer or another third party from the dashboard. Enter the examination index number, type and year, then upload the e-certificate PDF. Provide the recipient institution and responsible officer details, state the reason for verification, accept the consent declaration and complete the eCitizen payment presented by the portal. The report is then generated and delivered through the selected method.

An organisation that verifies certificates regularly should create a separate Verifier Organisation account. KNEC’s guide requires the organisation’s registered name and type, the primary officer’s details, an official email address, phone number, physical address and a PDF copy of the incorporation or registration certificate. The account is reviewed by KNEC before access is approved.

The current KNEC guide also describes bulk verification for approved organisations, using a candidate metadata CSV file and a ZIP file containing certificate PDFs. This is intended for large batches and is not necessary for an individual checking one certificate.

The KNEC e certificate platform can provide an available digital record even where you no longer have the paper certificate. However, it should not be described as a blanket replacement process for every examination. Use QMIS when the service you need is a certification letter, confirmation, amendment, equation or another formal examination query.

Fees, payment and download limits

Payment is completed through eCitizen using the methods shown at checkout. For M-Pesa, the portal may send an STK prompt to the phone number associated with the transaction. Confirm the service, candidate details and total before entering your M-Pesa PIN.

MANUAL VERIFICATION REQUIRED — current fee: The June 2026 KNEC user guide states a certificate-generation charge of KES 1,200 plus VAT and eCitizen charges, but an example payment screen in the same guide displays a different subtotal. Because the official document is internally inconsistent, use the exact amount shown by the live portal before payment and do not rely on a third-party quoted total.

Keep the eCitizen receipt and the portal order reference. Never pay through a personal phone number, social-media account or agent who promises to “activate” a missing certificate. A payment does not make an unsupported examination year appear in the system.

For unresolved cases, use the KNEC E-Certificate support page. At the last check, it listed support hours as Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. EAT, email info@knec.ac.ke and general phone +254 720 741 001. Share only the minimum details needed to locate your request and keep your OTP and payment PIN private.

Security and privacy checks

  • Confirm that the address begins with https://ecertificate.knec.ac.ke/ before entering personal information.
  • Use your own email address, not an agent’s, cybercafé attendant’s or another person’s account.
  • Never send an OTP, M-Pesa PIN, full National ID number or full index number through public comments or social media.
  • Do not bypass a certificate or browser security warning. Close the page and reopen the official address from KNEC.
  • Before sending a verification report, confirm the receiving institution and officer email. The portal process includes a consent declaration.
  • Store the downloaded PDF and verification report securely because they contain personal education records.

Teachers Kenya Hub will never ask you to send us your OTP, M-Pesa PIN, password, full identification number or certificate PDF to complete the process on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download my original KCSE certificate online?
The KNEC e certificate platform provides an available digital certificate. KNEC’s KCSE service page still directs regular candidates to collect physical certificates through their schools or institutions and private candidates through the Sub-County Director of Education.

Which KCSE years are available?
At the 27 July 2026 check, the portal advertised KCSE 1989–2024 as available. Recheck the official banner because KNEC can expand coverage.

Can I download a KCPE certificate from the platform?
The live public page listed KCPE as coming soon at the last check. Do not assume availability from the user guide alone; follow the current portal notice.

What happens if I lost my paper certificate?
If your KCSE record is available, the portal may let you generate a digital certificate after identity verification and payment. For a certification letter or another lost-certificate service, use QMIS.

How long can I download the e-certificate?
The June 2026 official guide states that the download button remains available for six months from the issue date. After that, a new generation request and payment are required for another downloadable copy.

Does “Referred to KNEC” mean the certificate is forged?
No. It means the automated process could not confirm the record or authenticity check and KNEC follow-up is required. Use the report reference when contacting KNEC.

Can an employer verify several certificates?
Yes. An approved verifier organisation can submit individual requests, and the official guide describes bulk verification for large batches using a CSV file and a ZIP of certificate PDFs.
